About the Area:

The Charente-Maritime is best known for its many miles of sandy beaches, charming islands and pretty seaside towns - and is considered the second sunniest department in France. On the Atlantic coast, just over an hour's drive away, towns such as La Rochelle and Royan, plus the islands of ile de Re and ile d'Aix, still have a strong sense of French identity and spirit, and the area has long been a popular holiday destination for tourists. The historic port town of La Rochelle, the leading harbour of the French Atlantic Coast, is full of life, with a seafront full of bustling restaurants, bars and cafes. Off the coast of La Rochelle and connected via a three kilometre bridge, is the island of ile de Re, with beautiful sandy beaches and villages of whitewashed cottages with painted shutters, including Ars-en-Re and Flotte-en-Re, considered to be two of the most beautiful villages in France . Further down the coast is Rochefort which dates from the 17th century when it was designed by Colbert, the naval minister to Louis Xiii, as a fortified town in order to protect the coast. Travel south again and at the mouth of the Gironde river is Royan, known for its modernist architecture.

Further inland are the pretty towns of Cognac and Angouleme, both a 30 minute drive from the property.

Cognac, famous for its brandy production and home to several important cognac distilleries, is the birth place of Francois the First, King of France and is steeped in history. Besides its famous speciality, Cognac has preserved a number of historic houses, buildings and monuments, such as the Valois castle. Every summer the town hosts an annual Blues Passions Festival.

Angouleme is the French capital of the comic strip and designated City of Art and History. it sits high above the Charente river and is surrounded by ramparts. The old town has lots of interest - Saint-Pierre cathedral, which dates from the 12th century and has a high tower and remarkable facade carved in the Poitevin Romanesque style, a town hall with flower garden, ramparts offering a magnificent view of the Charente valley, mansions, lively narrow streets to wander around and numerous cartoons painted on walls. The Circuit des Remparts, a historic race circuit, is held every September, using the town's ancient road layout. it attracts historic car enthusiasts for a series of races for classic and historic cars, on the original race track. it also features a "Concours d'Élegance" and a concours of car restoration.
