Featured in Maisons d'ici et d'ailleurs, this splendid luxury home is located in Mae Rim, in the hills of the northern reaches of the valley of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Completed in 2009, this pleasing home combines Lanna Thai style for its practicality with regard to orientation (wind, exposure to sunlight) and unique architectural principles (proportion and design) for its geodesic and geopathic (feng shui) advantages. it was built to stringent western standards and specifications by the owner. Consisting of four buildings, two residential, one utility and one farm building tucked away from sight yet close to the nearby village, organically farmed by the current owner for home and market produce. ideal as a self-sustaining family homestead, yet with potential to be developed as a resort or other project. The abundant use of redwood mahogany, teak and other select woods give the interior and exterior of this luxury property a unique opulence, with antique doors from China, india and Burma; the windows and doors are made exclusively of teak. The walls are autoclaved aerated concrete for enhanced insulation from both sound and heat. Extra strong and 3-meter deep pillars into the earth ensure seismic resistance, the houses are raised off the ground enabling flow of air and harder access for the bugs! Two and a half years in the construction and completed in 2009, great attention was given to orientation, proportion and telluric influences. 2 residential houses, workshop-coldroom-garage-staff quarters and a farm building including three pig sties, three large runs for fowl or rabbits, laboratory and storage. There are fans in every room and air conditioning in most, see Links for more info on Chiang Mai weather. A deep well provides year-round quality water, there is also mains water supply. A single phase transformer ensures a constant supply of 220 V current, with a generator in case of power cut. The soil in the hill region mainly consists of laterite, great for making mud bricks but not much else. We have worked the earth for seven years and are now reaping the rewards from the organic vegetable garden - excellent crops of carrots, beans, spinach, okra, papaya, banana, custard-apple, moringa, peanuts, herbs, salads, tomatoes, pineapple, chilli, noni, pepper, etc. The garden was a 40-50 year old fruit orchard and we have maintained the still productive jackfruit, lamyai, mango, star-apple and tamarind trees. We have planted decorative (mainly frangipani, baobab, a unique tetrameles nudiflora, wishing tree), fruit (avocado, red banana, breadfruit, carambola, coffee, durian, gak, custard-apple, lime, lemon, orange, lychee, mango, noni, passion fruit, pomelo, banana, walnut), medicinal (aloe vera, datura, ginger, goji, moringa, mulberry, myrobalan, pepper, turmeric), and many other plant varieties such as magnolia, hydrangea, clematis, rose, teak, etc. Mugwort is planted all around the land and house to limit mosquito presence, it is also used for making moxa sticks. There is an orchid shed with a wide and flourishing range of plants, including vanilla. The water comes principally from a well on the property, it has never run dry in the nine years of being here, is pleasant to the taste and has a relatively high pH at 7.2, it is filtered coming into the house and has an average hardness requiring no mineral deposit removal measures, the orchids appreciate it especially!
